YHA Cairns Central and Sustainability

Cairns Central YHA is committed to reducing its environmental footprint through a mix of conservation and sustainable practices. Our initiatives include reducing energy emissions, minimising waste and efficient water usage. 

  Energy/Greenhouse gas reduction:

 

  •  Air-conditioning controlled by a building management system 
  •  Unused computers and monitors turned off at night 
  •  Low energy bulbs used throughout the property 
  •  Promote the use of public transport 
  •  Bathroom exhaust operated only when required
  •  Participate in annual Earth Hour event
  •  Solar panels for hot water heating

 

 Waste Minimisation:

 

  • Recycling stations in kitchen, lift landings and office areas
  • Recycle paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, aluminium and steel cans, batteries, clothing and printer cartridges
  • Have a dedicated area for guests to leave things they don’t need but other people might
  • Use recycled paper in hostel office
  • Sell refillable water bottles and fabric shopping bags
  • Growing our own vegetables/herb garden for guest use

 

 Water Saving Measures:

 

  • Rainwater tank on site used to flush toilets
  • Water efficient taps and showers (3 star WELS rating) 
  • Dual flush toilets
  • Signage in bathrooms encouraging guests to minimise water usage
