SUSTAINABILITY PRACTICES
Byron Bay YHA is committed to reducing its environmental footprint through a mix of conservation and sustainable practices and services. Initiatives include:
Energy/Greenhouse gas reduction:
Solar hot water system with gas booster (partially funded by guest contributions to the Hostel Sustainability Fund)
Low energy lighting used in some areas of the hostel
Most computers and monitors turned off at night
Promotion of public transport
Bike rental with free bike storage
Carbon offsetting flights taken for work
Participate in Earth Hour
Electricity usage per guest has dropped over 10% since the installation of a solar hot water system in 2011.
Water Saving measures:
4 star WELS rated taps and 3 star WELS rated showers
Dual flush toilets (3/6 litre)
Signage in bathrooms and kitchens encouraging guests to minimise water usage
Front loader washing machines
Rainwater tank used to water gardens
Drought resistant planting in gardens
Waste Minimisation:
Recycling stations in kitchens, common areas, external areas and office areas.
Recycle paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, aluminium and steel cans, batteries and printer cartridges.
Organic waste collected for recycling offsite
Use recycled paper in office
Sell fabric shopping bags
Social Sustainability:
Provide work experience opportunities
Member of local tourism organisation
